Canada is noted for its numerous lakes and for the incredible fishing it provides and every year thousands of people who love fishing take a vacation there to enjoy Canada northern pike fishing. Because the water in the bays and inlets around the larger lakes, including the Great Lakes, is slightly warmer and has more food than is found in the open water, they are the home of vast numbers of large northern pike and the perfect place to fish for them.

Award winning northern pike can also be found in smaller lakes of the Canadian shield mostly because that area does not have the kind of heavy fishing stress found in the southern lakes which also helps make it possible for the northern pike to live longer and grow to be trophy size fish. Other good places to enjoy fishing for northern pike are Ontario and Manitoba, where some of the finest fishing trips are offered and with a little knowledge about the fish and how to catch them one can generally return home with a large number of pike.

Finding a good location for fishing is relatively simple but catching northern pike is not. Pike spend almost all of their time in the spring in weedy, shallow areas 2 to 15 feet deep and then move to deeper water at 15 to 30 feet as the summer warms the water. As that happens fishing gets more difficult because the pike get more scattered, and also because angling for the pike in the summer can be problematic as the water quickly gets too warm and fish eat less or not as often as they do in cooler water.

The best fishing time for northern pike is during the daylight hours however now and then they can be caught while fishing at night. Characteristically northern pike will lie in or near a weedy cover or a cover provided by submerged rocks or logs. They will laze without moving, waiting for bait fish or hopefully for the tempting lure or bait of the person fishing. Pike is the key player in most waters. They feed on mice, turtles, salamanders, muskrats, small ducks and other birds even though their primary food is fish.

The majestic Canadian outdoors is one of the most beautiful and exciting places to vacation and Canada northern pike fishing can be a dream holiday for those who love fishing.
