While experienced anglers are probably familiar with the different tips for catching northern pike, there are many people who are new to this exciting and unique sport. Even for more experienced fishers, there are still plenty of new pike fishing tips which may help improve the chances of catching pike. From the different types of bait they are drawn to and the best lures to use, there are a variety of helpful information that can assist in catching northern pike.

Many people that are experienced anglers may be accustomed to use a specific type of lure, regardless of what of fish it is. Choosing just whatever lure is available, however, may not be the best idea if the fisherman wishes to catch pike without a lot of struggle. The best way to choose which type of lure will be effective is to find one that imitates the type of fish that pike are attracted to. Pike have a diet which consists of small baitfish such as shiners, small trout, and chubs. Finding lures that look similar to this baitfish, preferably light colored one that reflect the white tummy of a fish, are the best choice. Pikes see this light reflecting in the water and will come to investigate in hopes of a delicious meal.

Although it is important that the lure resembles the type of fish northern pike are interested in, it doesn’t need to be a strict guideline. Northern pike’s favorite meal is bluegill fish, but they can be difficult to catch. While many anglers will choose bait that is the exact replica of what they truly eat in the wild, this may be one case where they cannot do this. Choosing fish that are similar to what the northern pike would like is the best way to find bait that will be effective.

Something that many fishermen do not know, regardless of the amount of experience they have, is that they will often eat their own kind. Using smaller northern pike as bait is an excellent choice for bait. Many people prefer to cute them open and use simply the stomachs, as the colors will definitely attract the northern pike right away.

The northern pike is a fairly easy fish to catch for several different reasons. Their wide variety in diet allows fishermen to use practically anything as bait and they have a good chance at getting a bite. There are no strict rules to what kind of bait or lure to use, as long as it reflects that they most commonly drawn to. Following the pike fishing tips listed above by using different types of baits and lures will allow an angler to experiment and find something that works best for northern pike fishing in the area.
